Because of this close proximity, the ocean and where land comes in close contact with the sea has seeped its way into the drawings I make. I entwine narrative threads to describe the gravity, wonder, and reverence of my subjects. I draw what is close to me, what is beyond my physical reach, and what is from the realm of the imagined. 
Smith was born in 1981 in San Francisco, CA where she currently lives and works. She received an MFA from University of California, Berkeley & BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art & Design. Her work was featured in the 2006 Whitney Biennial, New York and she has been an artist in residence at the Headlands Center for the Arts in Sausalito, CA. In 2011 Chronicle Books published her illustrated book of folk songs titled The Littlest Birds Sing the Prettiest Songs. She is represented by Rena Bransten Gallery, in San Francisco. 2010-2013 Untitled(1997), graphite & watercolor, 4' by 18', 2012 As I gazed from the deck to the surface of what ought to have been a pristine ocean, I was confronted with the sight of plastic, as far as the eye could see. It seemed unbelievable, but I never found a clear spot. In the week it took to cross the subtropical high, no matter what time of day I looked, plastic debris was floating everywhere: bottles, bottle caps, wrappers, fragments. Oceanographer Charles J. Moore wrote these words soon after he made the discovery of what we now call the "pacific garbage patch." The idea that waste can be managed, controlled, hidden, and vanished from sight is an illusion. This illusion is exposed in its enormity by the forces of nature, in this case the oceanic currents of the North Pacific gyre.
